New students · Ages 15+
You are welcome to begin where you are
No prior martial arts experience is required. Beginners learn through demonstration, direct correction, partner practice, and a progressive introduction to the fundamentals.
Your first visit
Simple, low-pressure, and focused on fit
You will not be asked to prove your toughness or keep up with experienced students.
The instructor will explain how class works, demonstrate the material, and give you a controlled way to participate. Your first visit is also a chance to ask questions and decide whether the dojo’s approach to serious, long-term training matches what you are seeking.

Common questions
What beginners usually want to know
What is Bujinkan Budō Taijutsu?
It is an integrated Japanese martial art centered on taijutsu, or coordinated whole-body movement. Students study striking, grappling, joint controls, throws, ukemi, footwork, distance, timing, kata, and traditional weapons within a connected curriculum.
Do I need previous experience?
No. Beginners are expected. The instructor introduces dojo etiquette, posture, movement, ukemi, and partner practice progressively, with correction based on the individual student.
What happens in my first class?
You will meet the instructor, review the training space and safety expectations, and work on foundational movement appropriate to your experience. Material is demonstrated before partner practice, and you may observe anything you are not ready to try.
What should I wear?
For introductory training, wear comfortable athletic clothing without zippers or hard fasteners. Remove jewelry and keep nails trimmed. You do not need to purchase a uniform immediately; the instructor will explain clothing and equipment after you begin.
How physically demanding is training?
Classes involve standing movement, getting down to and up from the floor, partner practice, and controlled technical drills. Intensity is built progressively and adjusted where practical, but martial arts training is still physical. Discuss injuries or medical concerns before class and consult a qualified health professional when appropriate.
Can teenagers participate?
Initial enrollment is intended for ages 15 and older. Students ages 15–17 may train in the regular program with parent or guardian involvement in the inquiry and enrollment process. A separate class for younger children is not part of the initial launch.
How are beginners introduced to partner training?
The instructor demonstrates the material, establishes the roles and safety limits, and pairs students appropriately. Beginners work at a controlled pace and learn how to give useful attacks, receive techniques safely, communicate, and stop when needed.
How is safety handled?
All physical practice carries risk. The dojo manages it through progressive instruction, ukemi, controlled speed and intensity, clear partner communication, and direct supervision. Students are responsible for protecting their partners and following the limits set for each exercise.
What is expected between classes?
Regular attendance matters, but class attendance and personal practice are not the same thing. Students are encouraged to revisit fundamental movement outside class in safe, appropriate ways. Consistent practice and thoughtful questions are more valuable than rushing through material.

Dojo etiquette
Respect made practical
Etiquette is not a test of knowledge. It creates a safe, attentive environment where everyone can learn.
Watch, listen, care for the training space, and treat your partner’s safety as seriously as your own. We will teach the rest as you go.
